When designing a product, you need to know how the individual would use that product in a productive way. Even f the product itself isn't perfect, it's important to find ways to work around those flaws and make compromises in order to ensure maximum satisfaction. When the presenter talks about there being a romance to creating a product, he is referring to the joy one feels when making a successful product. It's a natural feeling for designers.
